Study Note

The opening curse of Deuteronomy's Shechem ceremony — 'cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image, an abomination unto the Lord, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and putteth it in a secret place' — applies the curse formula to covert idolatry, addressing the hidden dimension of covenant violation that external observation cannot detect. The Levites' public recitation of these twelve curses (27:15-26) with the people's 'Amen' created a liturgical self-binding: the community acknowledged in advance the justice of judgment for specific transgressions. The inclusion of 'secret' idolatry as the first curse reflects Deuteronomy's deep concern with the interior of covenant loyalty — the same concern that drives the 'heart circumcision' theology of 10:16 and 30:6. Paul cites the Deuteronomy curse complex in Galatians 3:10-13 to argue that Christ has redeemed believers from the curse.
