Study Note

'Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ.' Paul's self-description as 'less than the least of all saints' is a superlative formed grammatically to go beyond any normal comparative — an invented expression of rhetorical humility that grounds his apostolic calling in sheer grace. The phrase 'unsearchable riches of Christ' (anexichniaston ploutos) appears nowhere else in the New Testament, suggesting an inexhaustibility in Christ that even the most exhaustive preaching cannot fully plumb. Romans 11:33's 'O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God' provides the doxological parallel.
