Paul instructs believers to 'put off the old man' ('palaios anthrōpos') as one removes a filthy garment — an image drawn from Jewish bathing and clothing metaphors for moral renewal. The 'old man' is not the physical body but the whole pattern of existence shaped by Adam's fall, characterized here by deceitful desires whose appetite grows as it is fed. Romans 6:6 uses the same 'old man' language in the context of baptismal death to sin, and Colossians 3:9 pairs the removal of the old self with putting on the new. Together these texts present Christian identity as an ongoing stripping away of habituated sin-patterns rather than a one-time legal transaction.
