Study Note

The Song of the Sea's rhetorical question — 'who is like you, O LORD, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?' — is the earliest and most influential formulation of the incomparability formula in the Hebrew Bible. The question does not assert strict monotheism (denying the existence of other gods) but rather incomparable supremacy: no other divine being approaches the LORD's character and power in the deliverance from Egypt. The three parallel descriptors — majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders — present divine holiness not as mere transcendence but as active, history-engaging intervention. The verse became the theological heart of Israelite worship, generating the 'Mi Chamocha' prayer central to Jewish liturgy and informing Revelation's heavenly doxologies.
