Study Note

The Root of Jesse standing as an ensign (signal pole) for the peoples, to which the nations will rally and whose resting place will be glorious, extends the messianic vision of verses 1-9 from Israel to the whole world. Paul quotes this verse directly in Romans 15:12 ('the Root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations; in him the Gentiles will hope') to support his mission to the Gentiles and his theology of Jewish-Gentile unity in Christ. The preceding context (11:11-16) describes a second exodus-like ingathering of dispersed Israel alongside this Gentile rallying, situating the verse within a comprehensive eschatological restoration. Revelation 5:5 and 22:16 apply 'Root of Jesse' and 'Root of David' directly to the risen Christ.
