Study Note

The divine speech within Isaiah 53 promises that the servant 'will see the light of life and be satisfied,' and that 'by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.' The phrase 'justify many' (yatzdik la-rabbim) is directly parallel to Paul's language in Romans 5:18-19 and provides one of the clearest Old Testament anticipations of the doctrine of justification through another's righteousness. The Dead Sea Scrolls text of Isaiah 53 includes 'light' after 'see' in verse 11, strengthening the resurrection resonance of the servant 'seeing light' after death. The 'many' here (ha-rabbim) became a key term in early Jewish-Christian soteriology, also appearing in Mark 10:45 and the Last Supper words of institution.
