Isaiah 60:1
Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.

Study Note
The luminous command 'Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee' opens Isaiah 60's vision of Zion's eschatological restoration. Against the darkness covering the nations (verse 2), Zion shines with reflected divine glory, drawing in the wealth and peoples of the world. John 1:9 and Revelation 21:23-24 — 'the city had no need of the sun... for the Lamb is the light thereof' — take up this imagery directly. The verse has shaped Christian Epiphany liturgy, Advent hymnody, and countless proclamations about the church's calling to be light in a darkened world.
