Study Note

The eschatological image 'as a bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee' applies the most intimate human joy — nuptial celebration — to the divine-Israel relationship at the moment of restoration. The verse belongs to a cluster of marriage metaphors in Isaiah 62 (v. 4: 'Hephzibah'/'my delight is in her'; 'Beulah'/'married') that collectively reverse Hosea's prophetic deployment of marriage imagery for judgment (spiritual adultery) by applying it to restored covenant. The divine rejoicing over the people echoes Zephaniah 3:17 ('he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love; he will joy over thee with singing'), establishing a shared prophetic vision of exuberant divine delight. Revelation 21:2 deploys this imagery for the New Jerusalem as a bride prepared for her husband, and John 3:29 for the church-Christ relationship, making Isaiah 62:5 a generative source for New Testament bridal ecclesiology.
