Jeremiah's letter to the Babylonian exiles contains the famous promise: 'For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.' The verse is universally beloved but often removed from its context: it was addressed specifically to exiles told to settle in Babylon for 70 years (verse 10), not to individuals seeking personal career guidance. The Hebrew 'machashavot' (plans/thoughts) carries deliberate, purposeful intent; 'shalom' (prosper/welfare) covers holistic well-being rather than material prosperity alone. Understanding the verse in its communal, historical, and eschatological context deepens rather than diminishes its force as a ground for hope in circumstances of loss.
