Study Note
God's promise to 'rejoice over them to do them good, and plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul' is one of the most anthropomorphically intense divine commitments in the Hebrew Bible. The phrase 'with my whole heart and with my whole soul' ('bekol-libbi uvekol-nafshi') applies to God the very terms the Shema demands of humans (Deuteronomy 6:5: 'love the Lord with all thine heart, and with all thy soul'), creating a breathtaking reciprocity. The context is the purchase of the field at Anathoth (verses 6-15) in the midst of the Babylonian siege — an enacted parable of confident hope that became the basis for this expanded oracle of restoration. Zephaniah 3:17 ('he will rejoice over thee with joy') and Luke 15's three parables of divine joy over recovering the lost provide rich intertextual context for this God who delights in restoration.
