Study Note

'If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you' — the prayer-promise in the Vine discourse is conditioned by mutual abiding: the believer in Christ, and Christ's words in the believer. The asymmetry of the condition is important: abiding in Christ is an ongoing relational disposition while Christ's words abiding in the believer implies constant saturation in his teaching. The resulting unlimited prayer-promise ('ask what ye will') has been carefully interpreted in Christian tradition as unlimited in the sense that desires formed within the condition of abiding will naturally align with God's will, not as a carte-blanche for any petitionary whim (cf. 1 John 5:14–15).
