Study Note

Jesus reports to the Father: 'I have given them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.' The verse encapsulates the transmission chain: from Father to Son (given words), from Son to disciples (given words), from disciples to reception and belief. The triple movement of receiving, knowing, and believing describes the epistemic and existential process by which the disciples arrived at genuine faith as distinct from superficial following. The priestly prayer of John 17 as a whole reflects Jesus' role as high priest interceding for his people — verse 8 is his report of completed work as the basis for the intercessions that follow (17:11-24).
