Study Note

Jesus's response to the disciples' concern about food — 'my food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work' — presents total orientation to the Father's mission as Jesus's deepest nourishment. The metaphor inverts the conversation about literal food (verse 31-33) in the same way Jesus had redirected the conversation about water in 4:10-14, making physical need the vehicle for revealing spiritual reality. The phrase 'to accomplish his work' (teleioso to ergon autou) anticipates the climactic cry from the cross 'it is finished' (tetelestai, 19:30), framing the entire ministry as a single assignment received from the Father and carried through to completion. The verse is central to Johannine mission theology: the Son's identity is constituted by his commission, and the commission defines the content of his existence.
