Study Note

The eschatological promise — 'then once more you shall see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve him' — responds to the community's complaint that the arrogant prosper and the evildoers are not judged (verses 14-15). The 'once more' signals that current circumstances have obscured the moral distinction that will be reestablished by divine judgment: the present ambiguity is temporary, the future clarity will be decisive. The verse prepares for the 'Day of the LORD' oracle in 4:1-3, where the sun of righteousness rises for those who fear the LORD while arrogance is burned as stubble. The passage grounds the book of Malachi's ethical urgency in eschatological theodicy: faithfulness matters because the currently obscured moral order will be made fully visible in divine judgment.
