Study Note

At the high-priestly trial, Jesus' silence before accusations fulfills Isaiah 53:7 ('he was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth'), and the adjuration by Caiaphas 'by the living God' forces the defining question: are you the Christ, the Son of God? The high priest invokes the divine Name in a formal oath-context, making evasion a form of false testimony under sacred oath. Jesus' response (26:64) both affirms ('you have said it') and transforms the title — 'hereafter ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven' — bringing Daniel 7:13 and Psalm 110:1 together as the real content of his messianic identity. The combination of silence and speech at the trial has fascinated christological reflection across centuries.
