Caphtorim

Early Patriarch · H3732
Old Testament

The Caphtorim, descendants of Mizraim, displaced the Avvim who lived in villages as far as Gaza.

The Caphtorim were descendants of Mizraim (Egypt), son of Ham, listed in the Table of Nations in Genesis 10:14 and 1 Chronicles 1:12. They are associated with Caphtor, identified with Crete or the Aegean region, and are noted in Deuteronomy 2:23 as a people who displaced the Avvim from their territory as far as Gaza. The Philistines are also associated with Caphtor (Amos 9:7; Deuteronomy 2:23), suggesting that the Caphtorim were among the ancestors or predecessors of the Sea Peoples who settled Canaan's coast.
