Ethan

Tribe of Judah · H0387H
Old Testament

Ethan was a son of Zerah and a grandson of Judah.

Ethan the Ezrahite was celebrated for his exceptional wisdom, mentioned in 1 Kings 4:31 as one of the wise men whom Solomon surpassed in understanding. He is identified in the superscription of Psalm 89 as the author of that great royal and covenant psalm, which meditates on God's promises to David and the apparent contradiction of exile and defeat. The name Ethan also appears in the Levitical genealogies of 1 Chronicles as a musician appointed by David, and scholarly tradition has debated whether these references reflect one or several individuals.
