Old Testament

Hivite city that tricked Joshua into a peace treaty.

Gibeon was the name of a Hivite city whose inhabitants famously deceived Joshua into making a peace treaty with them by pretending to be from a distant land (Joshua 9:3–15). When the deception was discovered, Joshua honored the oath and spared the Gibeonites, assigning them as 'woodcutters and water carriers' for the congregation. The city of Gibeon later became an important high place where Solomon offered sacrifices and received his gift of wisdom from God (1 Kings 3:4–5), and it appears also in Chronicles as a Benjamite ancestor in the line of Saul (1 Chronicles 8:29).
