Old Testament

Jehucal (or Jucal) was an official during King Zedekiah's reign who opposed the prophet Jeremiah and sought his punishment.

Jehucal (also called Jucal) was an official at the court of King Zedekiah of Judah who opposed the prophet Jeremiah. He is mentioned in Jeremiah 37:3, where Zedekiah sent him to ask Jeremiah to pray for the nation, and in Jeremiah 38:1, where he joined others in demanding Jeremiah's death on the grounds that his prophecies of doom were weakening the hands of the soldiers defending Jerusalem. Jeremiah was then cast into a muddy cistern. Jehucal represents the political opposition that Jeremiah consistently faced from the Jerusalem establishment in the final years before the exile.
