Old Testament

Jehudi was an official during King Jehoiakim's reign who read Jeremiah's scroll to the king, who then burned it piece by piece.

Jehudi was a court official in Jerusalem during the reign of King Jehoiakim who was sent to retrieve Jeremiah's scroll from Baruch and read it before the officials (Jeremiah 36:14). When the officials heard its contents, they reported to King Jehoiakim, and Jehudi then read the scroll before the king, who cut it in pieces with a penknife and threw it into the fire as each section was read (Jeremiah 36:21–23). This dramatic scene of the king destroying the prophetic word stands as one of the most vivid illustrations of royal rejection of divine revelation in the Old Testament, with Jehudi as the unwitting instrument of the confrontation.
