Mattathias

Exile Tribe of Judah · G3161G
New Testament

Mattathias was an ancestor of Jesus Christ, mentioned in His genealogy.

Mattathias appears twice in Luke's genealogy of Jesus: once in the line from Amos to Joseph in Luke 3:25, and a possible second instance in the line from Semein to Maath (Luke 3:26). These are individuals from the post-exilic period whose names are preserved in genealogical traditions not otherwise attested in the Hebrew scriptures. The name Mattathias was popular in the Second Temple period, most famously borne by the priestly father of the Maccabean revolt.
