Methuselah

Early Patriarch · H4968
Old Testament

Methuselah, the son of Enoch, was the oldest person mentioned in the Bible, living 969 years.

Methuselah, son of Enoch and father of Lamech, is the biblical figure credited with the longest lifespan in Scripture—969 years—placing his death in the very year of the flood according to the chronology of Genesis 5:21–27. He belongs to the antediluvian patriarchal line that runs from Adam to Noah, a genealogy notable for its extraordinarily long lifespans. His name has been interpreted to mean 'man of the dart' or 'when he dies, it shall be sent,' though the etymology remains debated. Luke includes him in the genealogy of Jesus (Luke 3:37, KJV: Mathusala).
