Nebuzaradan, the captain of the Babylonian guard, oversaw the destruction of Jerusalem, the exile of its inhabitants, and the release of Jeremiah.

Nebuzaradan bore the Babylonian title 'commander of the imperial guard' (Hebrew: rav tabachim) and was the senior Babylonian officer charged with the systematic destruction of Jerusalem following its capture in 587 BC. He burned the temple, the palace, and all the great houses of Jerusalem, broke down the city walls, and deported the population to Babylon (2 Kings 25:8–21; Jeremiah 39:9–10; 52:12–27). On Nebuchadnezzar's explicit orders he treated the prophet Jeremiah with consideration, releasing him and offering him provision (Jeremiah 39:11–14; 40:1–5). He returned to Judah in 582 BC to conduct a further deportation (Jeremiah 52:30).
