Nun

Exodus & Wilderness Tribe of Ephraim · H5126
Old Testament

Nun was the father of Joshua, Moses' assistant and successor as leader of Israel.

Nun was an Ephraimite and the father of Joshua, Moses' assistant and eventual successor as leader of Israel (Exodus 33:11; Numbers 11:28; Deuteronomy 31:23). He is listed in the Ephraimite genealogy as a son of Elishama (1 Chronicles 7:27), placing him in the generation that experienced the Egyptian bondage. Nun himself does not figure in any narrative; he is known entirely through his son's greatness. The patronymic 'son of Nun' occurs over thirty times in the biblical text as Joshua's standard identification, underscoring the significance of lineage in the Israelite conception of leadership.
