Pahath-moab

Old Testament

Pahath-moab was a group of people who returned to Jerusalem from the Babylonian exile, some of whom married foreign women.

Pahath-moab, whose name means 'governor of Moab,' was the ancestor of one of the largest family groups that returned from Babylon under Zerubbabel—2,812 men according to Ezra 2:6 (2,818 in Nehemiah 7:11). Several members of this family had married foreign women and appear in Ezra's reform list (Ezra 10:30). The name suggests an ancestor who had served as a governor or official over Moabite territory, possibly during the Davidic-Solomonic period when Israel exercised influence over Moab.
