Tirzah

Exodus & Wilderness Tribe of Manasseh · H8656G
Old Testament

Tirzah was one of the five daughters of Zelophehad who were granted inheritance rights in the absence of male heirs.

Tirzah was one of the five daughters of Zelophehad from the tribe of Manasseh, who successfully appealed to Moses and then to Joshua for the right to inherit their father's portion of land after he died without male heirs (Numbers 26:33; 27:1–11; 36:1–12; Joshua 17:3–6). The ruling granted in their case became a legal precedent in Israel's inheritance law, stipulating that daughters could inherit when there were no sons, provided they married within their own tribe. Tirzah's name is shared with an important Canaanite city that became the first capital of the northern kingdom of Israel.
