Old Testament

Zimri, a Benjamite, was the son of Jehoadah and is mentioned in the genealogies of Benjamin.

Zimri was the fifth king of the northern kingdom of Israel, who held power for only seven days around 885 BC—the shortest reign of any Israelite king. A commander of half the royal chariots, he murdered King Elah during a drinking party and seized the throne (1 Kings 16:9–10). He immediately killed every male member of the house of Baasha, fulfilling the prophecy of Jehu (1 Kings 16:11–13). When the army besieging Gibbethon heard what he had done, they proclaimed their own commander Omri king; Omri marched on Tirzah, and when Zimri saw the city was lost, he set the palace on fire and died in the flames (1 Kings 16:17–18). His seven-day reign became proverbial, and his name was later used as a byword for treachery (2 Kings 9:31).
