Zuph, also called Zophai, was an Ephraimite Levite, an ancestor of Samuel the prophet.
Zuph (also called Zophai in the parallel genealogy of 1 Chronicles 6:26) was an Ephraimite Levite, the son of Elkanah and father of Tohu, who stands in the ancestral line of the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 1:1; 1 Chronicles 6:35). The district of 'the land of Zuph' where Samuel's hometown was located may have been named after this ancestor. Several name variants in the parallel Levitical genealogies (Zuph, Zophai, Ziph) reflect the complexity of transmission in the genealogical records.
