Study Note

The exhortation 'do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God' connects the prohibition of anxiety with the prescription of prayer. Paul writes from prison (1:13) — circumstances where anxiety would be natural — making the command contextually credible rather than naively optimistic. The addition of 'with thanksgiving' alongside petition prevents prayer from becoming a form of spiritual anxiety-management; gratitude orients the person toward what God has already done. The subsequent promise (verse 7: 'the peace of God which passes all understanding') does not promise removal of circumstances but a peace that 'guards' (phrourei, a military term) the heart and mind.
