Study Note

The promise to the Ephesian overcomer — 'I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God' — deliberately echoes Genesis 3:22-24, where access to the tree of life was blocked after the fall as a protective measure. The term 'paradise' (paradeisos) is a Persian loan-word used in the Septuagint for the garden of Eden and in intertestamental Judaism for the eschatological dwelling of the righteous. The promise signals that eschatological salvation is the restoration of Eden rather than the abandonment of creation, reversing the exile from the garden through faithfulness in spiritual conflict. The image recurs at the book's climax (22:2, 14), framing the entire Apocalypse as the narrative of how access to the tree of life is restored through Christ.
