The vision of a 'great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, standing before the throne, and before the Lamb' is the most explicitly universalist vision in the New Testament. The fourfold ethnic formula (nations, kindreds, people, tongues) is drawn from Genesis's Table of Nations (Genesis 10) and Daniel 3, suggesting the entire human family represented before the Lamb. Missiologists and theologians have used this verse to ground both the universal scope of the Great Commission and the insistence that the eschatological community will retain ethnic distinctiveness rather than dissolving into uniformity.
