Study Note
'By the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God — so that from Jerusalem and all the way around to Illyricum I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel of Christ' — Paul's retrospective account of his apostolic mission establishes its geographical scope and its pneumatic-miraculous character as inseparable. The phrase 'fulfilled the gospel of Christ' (peplērōkenai to euangelion tou Christou) suggests that Paul understands his regional mission as completed, freeing him to move westward to Spain (verse 24). The pairing of 'word and deed' (verse 18) with 'signs and wonders' places miracles within the broader category of missionary proclamation rather than as independent proofs. The verse has been central in Pentecostal and charismatic theologies arguing for the continuation of miraculous gifts as a normal dimension of apostolic mission.
