Study Note
The declaration that 'the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death' introduces one of Paul's most dense and compressed theological formulations. The paradox of two 'laws' ('nomos') — the Spirit's law of life and sin's law of death — either uses 'law' in different senses (principle/power vs. Mosaic code) or makes a bold claim that the Spirit constitutes a new Torah that accomplishes what the Sinai Torah could not. Romans 8:3-4 immediately clarifies: God has done what the law 'could not do' (condemn sin in the flesh through Christ) 'that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit' — liberation from the law of sin is not antinomianism but the Spirit-enabled fulfilment of what the law always intended. Galatians 5:18's 'if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law' expresses the same liberation through a different angle.
