Study Note

Paul's assertion 'he must reign until he has put all enemies under his feet' applies Psalm 110:1 to Christ's present resurrection reign, depicting the interval between Resurrection and Parousia as a period of active subjugation of hostile powers. The passage is part of the carefully structured resurrection-sequence of 1 Corinthians 15:20–28, which distinguishes Christ's resurrection as first fruits, the parousia-resurrection of the faithful, and the final handover of the kingdom to the Father. The 'last enemy' identified as death (v. 26) provides the eschatological goal toward which the present reign is ordered, giving the interim period purposeful content. The verse is foundational for historic premillennial, amillennial, and postmillennial interpretations alike, since they all agree on present reign while disagreeing about its mode and duration.
