Study Note
'And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever' — the verse grounds the 'love not the world' command of verse 15 in ontological impermanence: the world (kosmos as system of values organized around self and away from God) and its desires are transitory, while alignment with God's will participates in the permanence of the eternal. The contrast anticipates 2 Peter 3:10–13's dissolution of the present order and 1 Corinthians 7:31's 'the fashion of this world passeth away,' grounding Christian eschatological ethics in the relative durability of competing loyalties: what lasts versus what does not.
