Study Note
Paul's description of election to salvation as being called 'through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ' links the means of election (the gospel) to the goal (sharing Christ's glory). The sequence of verse 13-14 — chosen from the beginning for salvation through sanctification and belief in truth, called through the gospel to obtain glory — provides a compact ordo salutis: election, sanctification, faith, vocation, glorification. The phrase 'to obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ' (eis peripoiēsin doxēs) uses the same term as 1 Thessalonians 5:9 ('obtain salvation'), equating the ultimate goal of election with participation in Christ's own glory. The verse grounds the comfort offered in verse 16 in the certainty of a divinely planned and executed salvation.
