Study Note
'Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.' The 'crown of righteousness' (stephanos tēs dikaiosynēs) concludes Paul's athletic metaphor — 'I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith' (verse 7) — with eschatological assurance. The universalizing of the promise ('not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing') transforms Paul's personal confidence into a pastoral encouragement applicable to every faithful believer. James 1:12's 'crown of life' and Revelation 2:10's 'crown of life' develop the same eschatological-reward imagery for faithful endurance.
