Study Note

'For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us' — the 'dividing wall' is widely understood as a reference to the stone barrier in Herod's temple that separated the Court of the Gentiles from the inner courts, with inscriptions threatening death to any Gentile who passed. Paul's bold metaphor declares that Christ's body (verse 15) is the new temple where that barrier no longer stands, and that Jew-Gentile reconciliation is the social embodiment of cosmic reconciliation to God. Ephesians 2:11–22 has been foundational in the theology of the church as a cross-cultural community, and in modern contexts has informed Christian reflection on racial reconciliation and the breaking of ethnic enmity.
