Ezra 3:11
And they sang together by course in praising and giving thanks unto the Lord; because he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid.

Study Note
The Levites and people sing antiphonally 'he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever' as the Temple foundations are laid — weeping and shouting simultaneously creating a mixed sound that could not be distinguished. The antiphonal praise formula is identical to the refrain of Psalms 106, 107, 118, and 136, grounding the Temple rebuilding in the same liturgical tradition that had accompanied the original Solomonic dedication. The co-mingling of tears (those who remembered the first Temple) and shouts of joy (those celebrating the restoration) encapsulates the exilic community's condition: grief over past loss and joy over present grace simultaneously held. Revelation's 'new song' (5:9-10; 14:3) continues this tradition of praise marking decisive eschatological acts.
