The command to be free from love of money and content with what one has is grounded in a divine promise quoted from Deuteronomy 31:6, 8 (via LXX): 'I will never leave you nor forsake you.' The translation of the Greek 'ou mē se anō oud' ou mē se enkatalipō' — five negatives in the Greek original — represents an extremely emphatic form of the promise, suggesting the author piles negatives to make the assurance as absolute as the Greek language permits. The connection between divine presence and freedom from covetousness is indirect but profound: if God himself is never absent, then the fundamental anxiety driving the accumulation of security through wealth is addressed at its root. The following verse — 'The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?' (quoting Psalm 118:6) — extends the logic to persecution as well as material need.
