Study Note

The promise 'he will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces' is the Hebrew Bible's most explicit statement of eschatological conquest of death, quoted by Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:54 as fulfilled in the resurrection of Christ. The verb 'swallow up' (bila') reverses Isaiah 5:14's image of Sheol swallowing the dead — death is undone by the same consumptive act that constituted it, a poetic reversal of cosmic proportion. The 'wiping of tears from all faces' is the image Revelation 7:17 and 21:4 apply to the new creation, making this Isaiah text a seed-verse for the entire eschatological hope of the canon. The verse's scope — 'all faces,' 'all the earth' (v. 7) — announces universal redemption as the horizon of divine saving activity.
