Study Note

The Second Servant Song opens with the Servant's own voice calling to 'the isles' and 'the people, from far' — an audience beyond Israel — to hear his testimony that 'the Lord hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.' The prenatal calling echoes Jeremiah's vocation (Jeremiah 1:5) and anticipates the Lukan annunciation tradition, suggesting a prophetic self-understanding that precedes historical emergence. The Servant's description of his mouth as 'a sharp sword' hidden in God's quiver (49:2) employs weapons-of-speech imagery that Hebrews 4:12 applies to the word of God and Revelation 19:15 applies to the returning Christ. Simeon's prophecy in Luke 2:32 ('a light to lighten the Gentiles') explicitly cites this song as fulfilled in Jesus.
