Isaiah's vision of the enthroned LORD in the Jerusalem temple leads immediately to the prophet's confession of unworthiness: 'Woe to me! I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips.' The specific focus on 'lips' is both contextually motivated — Isaiah is a prophet whose vocation centers on speech — and theologically significant, linking human moral corruption to speech. The seraph's purification of Isaiah's lips with a live coal (verse 6) provides the paradigm for prophetic commissioning: divine cleansing precedes divine sending.
