'But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word' — God's declaration in the closing chapter of Isaiah sets inward orientation above external ritual as the criterion for divine attention. The verse's immediate context is a critique of Temple worship offered by those whose hearts are devoted to idols (66:3–4), making the contrast between building a house for God and possessing a 'contrite spirit' (shvar ruach) theologically sharp. The three qualities — humility, contrition, reverence for the word — appear throughout Isaiah's vision of the covenant community: Isaiah 57:15 uses nearly identical language for the place where God 'revives the spirit of the lowly.' Jesus's beatitude on the 'poor in spirit' (Matthew 5:3) resonates with this Isaianic tradition of spiritual poverty as the condition for divine nearness.
