The triple imperative — 'let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger' — functions as a practical application of the new birth effected by the word of truth (verse 18), framing receptivity and emotional restraint as marks of life transformed by the gospel. The sequence is deliberate: hearing precedes speaking, and slowness to anger is the fruit of both — anger arises when the speaking self has silenced the listening self. The wisdom tradition provides antecedents (Proverbs 13:3; 17:27-28; Sirach 5:11-13), but James places the instruction within a theological context: the anger of man 'does not produce the righteousness of God' (verse 20).
