Study Note

'But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.' The seven-fold catalogue of heavenly wisdom contrasts with the 'earthly, sensual, devilish' wisdom of verse 15 that produces envy and strife. The sequence — purity first, then peace — is significant: James refuses a 'peace' that bypasses moral integrity. The same pattern appears in Hebrews 12:14 ('follow peace with all men, and holiness') and in Jesus's Beatitudes, where purity of heart and peacemaking are both included as marks of the kingdom's children.
