Jeremiah 18:18
Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.

Study Note
'Come, let us make plots against Jeremiah, for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not pay attention to any of his words' — the people's conspiracy against Jeremiah preserves the three traditional offices of religious authority in Israel (priest, sage, prophet) as the alternatives they trust over Jeremiah. The irony is acute: those who should be guardians of the word conspire to silence God's word delivered through Jeremiah, placing institutional religious authority against prophetic address. The verse introduces one of Jeremiah's most bitter personal laments (18:19–23), where the prophet invokes covenant curses against his enemies — among the most disturbing intercessory prayers in the Hebrew Bible. The pattern of prophetic rejection here prefigures Jesus's observation about Jerusalem killing the prophets (Matthew 23:37) and Paul's description of the 'circumcision party' opposing his mission.

And they say, Come, And we devise against Jeremiah devices, For law doth not perish from the priest, Nor counsel from the wise, Nor the word from the prophet, Come, and we smite him with the tongue, And we do not attend to any of his words.
Then they said, Come, let us make a design against Jeremiah; for teaching will never be cut off from the priest, or wisdom from the wise, or the word from the prophet. Come, let us make use of his words for an attack on him, and let us give attention with care to what he says.
