Study Note

'For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth' — one of the Hebrew Bible's most explicit resurrection-hope texts, spoken from the abyss of physical deterioration and social abandonment. The 'redeemer' (go'el) is the kinsman-redeemer of Israelite social law (Leviticus 25; Ruth 4), whose obligation was to vindicate, rescue, and restore the rights of a family member. Job applies the legal-social institution to a metaphysical claim: there is one who will vindicate him after death, standing upon the earth ('dust') at the 'latter day.' Handel's Messiah has embedded this verse in Christian resurrection consciousness, and the verse remains among the Bible's most celebrated anticipations of Christ as the living redeemer.
