Job 40:9
Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like him?

Study Note
God's challenge to Job from the whirlwind — 'hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like him?' — belongs to the divine speeches of chapters 38–41 that respond to Job's demand for a legal hearing by confronting him with the incomprehensibility of divine creative power. The verse deploys the 'arm of God' metaphor used elsewhere for divine military might (Isaiah 51:9; Exodus 15:16) and the thunder-voice metaphor for theophany (Psalm 29), asking whether Job can match either. The rhetorical strategy is not to answer Job's complaints about justice but to reframe his epistemological position as a creature — he cannot adjudicate divine action because he lacks the vantage point of the creator. Paul employs this logic in Romans 9:20 ('who are you, O man, to answer back to God?') to ground divine sovereignty over election against human challenge.
