Study Note

'And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the Lord your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath' — Rahab's confession — the only explicit monotheistic creed in the conquest narrative — comes from the mouth of a Canaanite prostitute rather than an Israelite priest or elder. The 'melting of hearts' (mōg leleb) was the predicted terror of Deuteronomy 20:8 and the outcome of Exodus 15:15–16's Song of the Sea, showing that the Exodus testimony had already done its strategic work in the land before Israel's armies arrived. Hebrews 11:31 and James 2:25 both cite Rahab as a model of faith-in-action, making her confession the hermeneutical key to her rescue and her entry into Jesus's genealogy (Matthew 1:5).
